Dog Vaccinations

As time has gone on, most have forgotten why we need to vaccinate our dogs.  Parvovirus, distemper and parainfluenza are often FATAL.

With vaccination we have reduced the prevalence of these nasty diseases, however parvovirus is still ‘alive and kicking’ in Hawkes Bay.  We have experienced firsthand in the human field, diseases recurring when the vaccination of children is allowed to lapse e.g. whooping cough.

If you have let your dog’s vaccination lapse, don’t delay, protect them against life threatening diseases.

Vanguard plus 5:  (Canine Distemper, Canine Adenovirus 1 & 2, Parvovirus and Para-influenza)

These four are contagious and potentially life-threatening viral diseases, therefore all dogs should be vaccinated for these.

Check the website for full information about Distemper and parvovirus.

Leptoguard:  (Leptospira interrogans serovar copenhageni)

Leptospirosis is a fatal bacterial infection transmitted by rats.

Lepto vaccination has been an add-on option as it was rarely seen in Hawkes Bay in the past.  However, there has now been several worrying outbreaks of leptospirosis in dogs so we will be recommending to all our clients that this be a MUST with their next annual health check.

Kennel Cough:  (Bordetella bronchiseptica)

This is a contagious respiratory disease that is most likely to occur in boarding kennels or situations where dogs are in close contact.

Bordertella or Kennel Cough is also another unpleasant disease for dogs and while is not life threatening should be considered by all owners as it is easily transmitted from dog to dog.

We recommend vaccination of all dogs going into boarding kennels, attending dog shows, agility or obedience classes.
